Interview with Sue Burrell

Sue and Andrew Burrell won Trip Advisor’s Best B&B In The World in 2015!  I’m so happy to bring you this interview with Sue, where she shares her wisdom on how they managed to reach those dizzy heights after just 2 and a half years in business!  Here’s Sue’s wisdom:

  1.   Choose one strategy and get really good at it.  Sue focussed on using Trip Advisor’s review system and reached over 500 reviews in just 2 and a half years.  Don’t scatter yourself too thinly, just do what works
  2.   Keep yourself and your B&B fresh and new.  People don’t want to see the same thing year after year.  It will also keep you interested when you switch things around and brighten things up.
  3.   Go the extra mile to make guests feel special by commenting on their appearance.  People won’t remember what you did or what you said, but they will always remember how you made them feel (Maya Angelou)
  4. Ask for guests suggestions and feedback.  Never assume you know it all, they might just have a suggestion that you hadn’t thought of.
  5. No matter what’s going on in your own life, always, always treat everyone like royalty!  And smile 🙂

Here’s the interview – enjoy it and please do post your comments below to let me know what you thought and anything you plan to change in your own B&B

  1. Enjoy reading your tips! Thank you. 😀

  2. Impossible to hear Sue talk sadly, but got the gist. I have watched her business avidly over the last couple of years, they do nothing better or different to what I do, her house is smaller than mine in a similar old village but they have the bonus of breweries to visit on their doorstep which I do not. TripAdvisor is my main marketing tool also, however, even though I ask guests to leave a review, and what a huge help it is for future guests, few seldom do.

    • Hi Fiona and thanks for your comment. You don’t need to do anything the same as anyone else, in fact it’s impossible. You just have to be YOU. Hope you’re well 🙂

      • Sue Burrell says:

        Hi Fiona
Lovely to know that you have been following us avidly since we began a few years ago. I thought you might be interested to learn that we do not ask guests to leave a review when they stay. I have read your reviews and we are different in so many ways and if you follow Yvonne’s advice and carry on being you and believing in yourself you will continue to prosper.
        Kind regards
        Sue Burrell

  3. Thankyou so much for introducing Sue and her bnb to me. I gained a greater understanding on a couple of levels which is so helpful. I quickly put away 2 area rugs from my main floor to help make things look fresh.

Thankyou Yvonne for keeping me in the loop.

    All the best,

    Sharon
