Not Making Enough Money?

One of the big challenges that I hear over and over, is: "I’ve been doing this business for some time now and it should be making me some money, but it isn’t and I don’t know what to do" If this is you, then I have a couple of tips for you today First, recognise that your business is making you money you’re just not taking anything for yourself, so that at the end of the month, there’s nothing for you and it feels like you’re working for nothing. You

Fundamentals v bright shiny objects

Around 10 years ago, fresh out of personal development and wealth creation school (!), I started a business with a new friend, empowering women to use their passions to grow businesses and become wealthy. After about a year, my new friend and I realized that it was a bad idea to be working together, so I moved on and left her to it.  It’s a long story for another day…. However, what I did have was a small mailing list, which I used to kick-start my B&B business after returning

Realizations about discounting

I was out in Central Asia again last week, delivering the second training to a group of motivated B&B and Guest House owners, and this time it was all about my favourite subject - online marketing :) This is such a vast area that we had to extend the 3 day training to 4 days so that they could at least get their guest attraction system "switched on" - which they did,  and more on that and a little test we did  in another post. But today, I wanted to

We’re all connected

Just back from a full-on trip to a country in Central Asia where they are developing tourism and are invested in helping their accommodation providers to be more visible and pro-active. I was invited to lead an intensive 3 day training on everything I know about running a successful B&B business from mindset and attitude to internet marketing (my two favourite topics) and everything in between.  We had a blast! I love this work! What struck me about the group and what I think will interest you is how similar

Your Bed and Breakfast Business and the 3rd element

In my last blog post (CLICK HERE to read it) I talked about the 3 elements you need to run and maintain a profitable B&B business. To recap- the first element (puppy)  is your website and your control over it.  Think of your website as your shop window to the world – a kind of market stall where people can come and buy from you.  You’ll want to be in control of what you’re selling and how people can buy from you. The second element (puppy) is your creative imagination

Who’s in charge of your business?

I’ve just returned from a trip to the UK where I presented at Visit Wiltshire’s annual tourism event at Bowood House, and returned to an avalanche of requests to join the new Facebook group Beautiful Bed and Breakfasts and get on our Google map! In both cases, this had me looking at a lot of websites! What I noticed most is the varying degrees of quality websites from the cheap-home-made-by-my-brother’s-girlfriend’s-aunt-who’s-just-had-a-baby-and-can’t-make-any-changes-for-me-right-now to expensive-looking-professionally--presented-and-run-by-a-webmaster-who-has-other-customers. In both cases and at both ends of the scale, the person who’s running the show (the business

Are you on the map?

I’ve just taken over the management of a Facebook group and the previous owner, Maria has worked really hard on a fabulous Google map which shows the location of all of the members, together with website addresses. The real beauty of this map is that when you’re on it and people tap in your keywords to search, Google will display you on the right hand side of Page 1 with your pictures and contact details! I'll let you know how you can get on the map in just a minute,

The dangers of listing with airbnb

Just the other day, I noticed an article by the BBC about a London Airbnb host whose properties had been de-listed for no reason, even though his reviews were good, his listings were good and he had been with them for some time. And the sad thing is, there isn’t a single thing he can do about it. Quite simply, overnight in a single stroke, his entire business has been ruined. This could happen to anyone, because here’s the truth – they don’t really care about us. Not one jot.

Interview with Liz Truckle

Liz and Paul Truckle won Trip Advisor's Best B&B  In Austria in 2015 so I wanted to get Liz's nuggets on what has made them so successful.  Here's Liz's wisdom: Take care of your own energy levels.  If you're new to this business you will be enthusiastic and totally absorbed in the business, until you wear yourself out!  Be mindful up front that you need to re-charge your own batteries regularly before you can properly serve others Be conscious of guests' individual needs, and less focused on how you think
