3 Misssed Opportunities – which one are you missing?

In this article, I’m speaking specifically to small to medium sized hospitality business owners, where an intimate experience including interacting with the owner/manager/team members are some of the reasons guests are booking.  I call this “personality and emotionally driven hospitality”.  It’s not a well known term.  I made it up!   It describes the kind of experience smaller establishments have the power to offer, if they choose to. If you run a larger property, offering a more generic, anonymous experience, you’ll need a different strategy, and that’s for another day. Truth

How to invite your guests to return

One of the reasons clients seek help is because they’re simply not making enough money for the hard work they do, and often feel defeated, worn out and sometimes even ready to give up.  When what looks good on paper doesn’t transmute into a good personal income for yourself, it can be demoralising to say the least. There’s basically three ways you can make more money. You can find more guests, which means that you increase your occupancy rate.  You may already feel you can’t cope with any more guests,

Know thyself

"Know thyself” is a famous phrase reported to have been spoken by Socrates centuries ago, but I believe is even more relevant today We live in an age where there's advertising coming at us from all fronts.  Where we’re being bombarded by “buy me” subliminal messages everywhere we turn. On the TV, the radio and now on our phones, computers and any technological device you can think of. So much so that we can’t seem to turn it off. It’s almost like an addiction. We need to stay informed Keep

The real reason you’re using online travel agents

Today I want to give you some real insights into what I see going on in this industry. Pull up a chair and sit down, because you may not like it So here goes… The real reason you’re using OTAs to bring you guests, is because it’s easier You can hide You can stay in your “comfort zone” You don’t have to put yourself “out there” and risk criticism or rejection You can blame them You can complain about them They can be the enemy You don’t have to take

Do you need a new hair do?

There are two hairdressers in my village.  For a village of just over 1000 people that’s pretty good. So if we leave out the babies who don’t need a haircut, and say 900 people who get their hair cut every 8 weeks (like me) and spend on average 30 euros, then that’s 900 people x 30 euros x 6 times a year = 162,000 euros a year.  Not a fortune, but probably enough to keep the two of them going. Plus any business from neighbouring villages where there is no

How strong are your boundaries?

There’s a long thread going on over on Facebook in our private group for B&B owners What’s it all about?  Boundaries and the abuse of them. One of the reasons we started in this business, I believe, is because we love people and we love entertaining and taking care of them. But not every minute of every day It’s just exhausting and we know it But maybe guests don’t So we have to lay it out for them And it’s hard to do, isn’t it? It might feel selfish It

Realizations about discounting

I was out in Central Asia again last week, delivering the second training to a group of motivated B&B and Guest House owners, and this time it was all about my favourite subject - online marketing :) This is such a vast area that we had to extend the 3 day training to 4 days so that they could at least get their guest attraction system "switched on" - which they did,  and more on that and a little test we did  in another post. But today, I wanted to

Why increasing your network is crucial for your business

I’m just putting together my training presentation for my second trip to Central Asia at the end of the month.  It will be 100% focussed on internet marketing, and here’s why…. With over 3 billion people now online, doesn’t it make sense to learn how to reach those people and meet them where they are? And wouldn’t it make sense to have as many of those 3 billion as you can in your own online network, so you have a bigger pool of people to hear about what you do

Your Bed and Breakfast Business and the 3rd element

In my last blog post (CLICK HERE to read it) I talked about the 3 elements you need to run and maintain a profitable B&B business. To recap- the first element (puppy)  is your website and your control over it.  Think of your website as your shop window to the world – a kind of market stall where people can come and buy from you.  You’ll want to be in control of what you’re selling and how people can buy from you. The second element (puppy) is your creative imagination
