Not Making Enough Money?

One of the big challenges that I hear over and over, is: "I’ve been doing this business for some time now and it should be making me some money, but it isn’t and I don’t know what to do" If this is you, then I have a couple of tips for you today First, recognise that your business is making you money you’re just not taking anything for yourself, so that at the end of the month, there’s nothing for you and it feels like you’re working for nothing. You

Your increasing customer spend system

I’m just finishing up a week’s detox at a retreat centre and was marvelling at the upsell opportunities available at this small hotel. During my stay they have very successfully and effortlessly quadrupled my room rate, and made me very happy. Now, this is a detox retreat centre and they make most of their money on cures and treatments but that’s not all They have literally pulled everything they do apart to ask the question – how can we add more value? Let me give you an example…. They serve

Know thyself

"Know thyself” is a famous phrase reported to have been spoken by Socrates centuries ago, but I believe is even more relevant today We live in an age where there's advertising coming at us from all fronts.  Where we’re being bombarded by “buy me” subliminal messages everywhere we turn. On the TV, the radio and now on our phones, computers and any technological device you can think of. So much so that we can’t seem to turn it off. It’s almost like an addiction. We need to stay informed Keep

Public humiliation and an important decision

A long time ago when I was about 13 years old, my school announced a dressmaking competition.  As the uncrowned “best seamstress in Mrs Mitchell’s needlework class” I decided to enter.  My mother who had taught me to sew helped me to make a dress and I proudly took it into school to enter it into the competition. It was an A line dress in the Twiggy style with a round collar, buttons half way down the front and the fabric was soft and flowing.  It was red. I decided

Loving systems

Last week I got an email from a potential guest enquiring about a room for one night.  I replied with a link to the room I recommended for him, and he emailed me back saying that after seeing the room and especially the video of me, he wanted to reserve for 3 nights.  He later went on to order dinner and one of our Champagne tours. This increased my customer spend from just €120 to just over €1200 How did this happen? By having a system to offer guests more

The elephant in the room?

What a week last week when, after a 40-year relationship, the people of the UK voted to “divorce” from the European Union.  Living in France (but still a Brit) meant I didn’t get the chance to vote, but what a fascinating process to observe. Here’s my thoughts…. The arguments from both the “leave” and the “remain” sides were much like the voices inside our heads when we have the opportunity to change. No-one likes change, and as human beings we often get stuck in how it is because of the

How strong are your boundaries?

There’s a long thread going on over on Facebook in our private group for B&B owners What’s it all about?  Boundaries and the abuse of them. One of the reasons we started in this business, I believe, is because we love people and we love entertaining and taking care of them. But not every minute of every day It’s just exhausting and we know it But maybe guests don’t So we have to lay it out for them And it’s hard to do, isn’t it? It might feel selfish It

Realizations about discounting

I was out in Central Asia again last week, delivering the second training to a group of motivated B&B and Guest House owners, and this time it was all about my favourite subject - online marketing :) This is such a vast area that we had to extend the 3 day training to 4 days so that they could at least get their guest attraction system "switched on" - which they did,  and more on that and a little test we did  in another post. But today, I wanted to

We’re all connected

Just back from a full-on trip to a country in Central Asia where they are developing tourism and are invested in helping their accommodation providers to be more visible and pro-active. I was invited to lead an intensive 3 day training on everything I know about running a successful B&B business from mindset and attitude to internet marketing (my two favourite topics) and everything in between.  We had a blast! I love this work! What struck me about the group and what I think will interest you is how similar
