My eldest daughter went for an interview last week, and had the most extraordinary experience. We don’t know if she’s been successful yet, but what struck her and me was that this was no ordinary interview.
First, she had to do an aptitude test, then she got 10 minutes with the CEO to talk about her and her skills – not about the job she had applied for.
He was very interested in how the aptitude test had thrown up some very conflicting results and he actually couldn’t work out who she was.
To get the best out of his employees, he hires on natural abilities, then trains for skills. But her natural abilities were conflicting and he was stumped.
Being my daughter, she’s done a lot of personality tests over the years, and we’re pretty sure she’s a “star” personality, but over the last few years she’s been hiding her light, being compliant and quiet, often doubting and denying her “star” just to fit in. Now she’s having to take a second look.
Do you know who you are?
The more we know about ourselves, the better we understand what makes us tick and why. If like me, you’ve been through the western education system, you’ll know that this system focuses on improving your weaknesses rather than promoting your strengths. There’s no room in the one-size-fits-all methodology for “stars”, “supporters”, “accumulators”, “creators” etc. You must sit down, listen and repeat after me…..
As one of my favourite business mentors, Jim Rohn says:
“formal education will make you a living, self-education will make you a life”
And another great quote attributed to Albert Einstein:
“Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will go through its whole life believing it is stupid.”
What’s your genius?
Playing to your strengths or in your “genius zone” is absolutely crucial when running a business.
