The Death of the Independent Bed and Breakfast Business

Yesterday I ran a webinar called “The Death of the B&B” and in it I highlighted the reasons why we have come to a crisis in our industry. Here’s a comment I received from Tom who attended.  He said…

Congratulations!
It was outstanding.  You were singing my song.
I have been bedeviled by the fact that the OTA’s have taken over.  Far too many of us have become mattress renters.  We now work for these folks.”

Fortunately Tom has been able to keep his independence and not be sucked into the OTAs but not everyone has had the courage to do that.  This presentation is for you.  I hope you’ll book a Free Consultation with me, and as always, please do leave a comment below.  I’d love to know what you think.

  • Well, as my late Father in Law used to say, What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly, it is dearness only that gives every thing its value: The quotation continues thus ….. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as freedom should not be highly rated. Thomas Paine (1737 – 1809).
Perhaps this should become the B & B owners mantra, but who is going to tell the guests?

  • We are not keen OTA supporters. Prefer to do our bookings private. We have this year put on the naughty shoes and joined Booking.com. Even we did receive a lot of bookings via their site they have linked themselves to our TripAdvisor site and believe me they do not plan to move. We therefore raised the rate on their site. We do have our own booking site at Nightsbridge especially for our credit card user guests.
Our rate is our rate if a Travel Agent want to book anybody they have to sort out the commission from their side.
    Thanks for the insight.
Love from a cold South Africa

  • Yvonne, good morning.
My partner Barry and I attended very carefully your webinar and we both agree it has been a very useful tool for self realization and self critisism. I would love a free appointment for a private councelling, just so that I share some aspects that may need putting right. Thanks a lot and keep up the good (social)work.
